Economic Development

Overview

Agriculture is the primary industry in the Vermilion region, with annual gross farm receipts of $80 million (1991) from sales of grains, oil seeds, beef cattle, hogs and dairy products. As a major service centre for producers, Vermilion is home to a number of related businesses: grain elevators, machinery agents, farm supply distributors, veterinary and government services. Major grain buying companies, as well as the Vermilion Seed Cleaning Plant, are located on Canadian National Railways trackage.

Nilsson Brothers Livestock Exchange, located south of Highway 16, provides livestock auction services for the region, with a 200 seat theatre and auction ring. Viterra operates a seed distribution centre in a 90,000 square feet facility on the town's eastern boundary.

Vermilion is also strategically located for heavy crude oil exploration and development. Oilfields in the Lloydminster, Wainwright, Cold Lake and Elk Point areas are easily accessible along Highway 16 and Highway 41.
