What does Infrastructure mean?

‘Infrastructure’ refers to:

  • Water
  • Sewer and storm mains
  • Water and sewer services to property line
  • All roadways located within the town limits 
Curb-Stop Repair and Replacement

The Town of Vermilion, AB is responsible for repairing and replacing the curb-stop which controls the flow of water for individual service lines and for any associated repair or rebuilding of sidewalks placed or built by the town.

What a property owner is responsible for:

  • Any pavement
  • Concrete driveway
  • Other material placed by a property owner
  • Any of the above that requires repair or replacement as a result of curb-stop repair and replacement
Infrastructure Replacement

The Town of Vermilion, AB provides replacement of main lines and services to property owners, based on the criteria of:

  • Existing pipeline material
  • The number of water breaks
  • Pipe size
  • Condition of roadway above

Please note: the cost is funded by an additional charge levied on the monthly municipal utility bill to all utility consumers.

Replacement Costs

This is a quick summary of the infrastructure replacement costs and responsibilities:

  • When the replacement of the lines and services necessitates the rebuilding of paved roadway surfaces, or when only an overlay to the existing road surface is required, the municipal portion of the cost of pavement will be 49% and the property owner’s portion is 51%. 
  • When construction of pavement is commenced for the first time the property owner shall bear 100% of the total cost.
  • When the replacement of the lines and services necessitates the replacement of curb and gutter, or when roadway reconstruction necessitates such a change, the property owner shall bear 100% of the total cost.
  • When replacement of waterlines requires maintenance or repair of sections of sidewalks and/or curb and gutter, this cost is funded by the monthly charge levied on the municipal utility bill to all utility consumers.

The policy outlined above applies to all streets on which the abutting properties have been previously assessed a street improvement levy, either as a local improvement charge or as a cost built into the initial sale of the lots.

Water and Sewer

The Town of Vermilion, AB is supplied water from two 120 foot wells. Vermilion's recently upgraded water treatment plant filters out iron and manganese then chlorinates and fluoridates the water prior to being discharged into the distribution system.

Facts about our water:

  • Pumping capacity of each well is 800 igpm
  • The Town has 1.2 million gallons of treated water storage
  • Sewage is treated in a mechanical "extended aeration" plant
  • After treatment, sewage flows into a backup lagoon system and then into the Vermilion River
  • Both water and sewage treatment plants operate under standards legislated by Alberta Environment
  • Existing sewage treatment facilities can service a population of 4,700
  • The water treatment capabilities is for a population of 5,000

Vermilion, AB also has a storm sewer water management system consisting of underground storm sewers, surface and parkway drainage, and detention ponds.
