Road Maintenance

Summer Road Maintenance

The Town completes road repairs throughout the year to maintain safe driving conditions and extend the life of road surfaces.

This work may include:

  • Asphalt patching following utility repairs or surface damage

  • Crack sealing to prevent water infiltration and further pavement deterioration

  • Pothole patching, which typically begins in early spring once road conditions allow

Freeze–thaw cycles, traffic volumes, and weather all contribute to pavement wear. Priority is given to driving lanes and high-traffic streets.

The Town maintains gravel roads and lanes to improve driving conditions and reduce dust during dry periods.

Dust Control

Dust control activities are weather dependent and typically begin in late spring once roads are dry and compact. Gravel roads may be graded, and water applied as needed to minimize dust.

Extended winter conditions or heavy rainfall may delay dust control operations.

Road Grading

Gravel roads and lanes are graded and re-gravelled as required, typically in spring and fall when conditions permit. Weather conditions can affect the timing of this work.

Line Painting

Lane lines, edge lines, centre lines, and crosswalks are repainted annually to improve visibility and safety. Line painting is weather dependent and requires clean, dry road surfaces. As a result, specific dates cannot always be provided in advance.

Street Sweeping

Street sweeping typically begins in early spring once snowmelt has drained. Crews focus first on removing heavier debris that has accumulated over winter, followed by continued sweeping throughout the summer to remove finer sand and keep streets clean.

Sidewalks, curbs, and gutters are inspected regularly and scheduled for repair based on the condition of the infrastructure and available budget.

Repairs related to utility work or surface damage are completed when weather conditions allow, typically between May and October.

Winter Road Maintenance

Snow removal is prioritized to support emergency access and safe travel.

  • Priority streets are cleared first, followed by secondary and residential streets

  • Downtown areas are typically cleared overnight or early morning

  • Residential streets are generally cleared between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., when fewer vehicles are parked

  • Streets scheduled for garbage collection may be prioritized to support service access

When possible, temporary no-parking signage is placed in advance to allow residents time to move vehicles. In some cases, streets may be cleared without notice if vehicles have already been removed.

Lane (Alley) Snow Removal:

Lane snow removal typically occurs toward the end of the winter season when snow begins to shift or melt.

  • Lanes are plowed from end to end, and snow may be windrowed along lane edges

  • Clearing your driveway and lane entrance can help reduce snow buildup at access points

  • Property owners are responsible for maintaining driveways and lane entrances

Residents are asked to pile snow to the left or right of their property and be mindful of neighbouring properties to help reduce flooding during spring melt.

Sidewalk Snow Removal

The Town is responsible for clearing snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to Town-owned properties. Sand or a sand/salt mixture may be applied to improve traction.

Property owners and tenants are responsible for clearing snow and ice from sidewalks adjoining their property within 48 hours of snowfall or ice accumulation.

Snow and debris must not be placed onto roadways from private property.

Curb Ramps and Driveway Aids

Rubber curb ramps and other driveway aids must be removed from streets before the first snowfall.

If left in place, these items can become caught in snow removal equipment and cause damage. Repair costs resulting from this damage may be charged to the property owner.

To prevent damage and ensure effective snow removal, residents are encouraged to remove curb ramps for the winter season.

Sanding

Sand is applied throughout the winter season to improve traction on icy roads, sidewalks, and pedestrian areas. Sanding is completed as required based on conditions, with salt use kept to a minimum.

Sidewalk Sandbox

For resident use, the Town provides free sand/salt mixture to help improve traction on sidewalks and walkways.

The sandbox is located on the north side of the Fire Hall at 5010 Railway Avenue and is available from November to March. Residents are asked to bring their own container.

During severe winter storm events, the Town’s Infrastructure and Planning Services Department focuses on restoring priority routes first to support emergency vehicles and essential travel. Secondary and residential streets are addressed as conditions allow.

During winter operations, crews may prioritize clearing streets along scheduled garbage collection routes. In severe storms, resources may be redirected to priority streets, and some residential streets may not be cleared immediately.

If your waste bin was not collected due to storm conditions, please remove it from the curb and wait until your next scheduled collection day or further direction from the Town. If snow removal equipment is expected to pass shortly, residents are encouraged to wait until operations are complete before placing bins at the curb.
