 Accounting Supervisor

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Corporate Services the Accounting Supervisor is a member of the Finance and Administration Team.

The primary focus of the Accounting Supervisor is all financial management, control and reporting, including overseeing the accounting functions, property tax, conducting forecast analysis, monitoring corporate credit and oversight of finance staff.
The Town relies on this role to ensure compliance with applicable legislation.

This is a permanent, long-term position with occasional work in the evening and weekend.

Education:

  • Preference will be given to applicants with:
  • A Bachelor Degree in Finance or Business Administration with major in Accounting.
  • An accounting designation (C.P.A.) or working towards it, is considered an asset.
  • Experience with Bellamy/Serenic Software
  • A combination of education/training in municipal administration/finance and experience may be considered.
  • Experience mentoring and coaching

Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in financial accounting and reporting for a municipality or government organization using fund accounting.
  • Experience with payroll
  • Experience with investments
  • Providing financial analysis to senior leadership
  • Experience with customer service for both internal and external customers
  • Experience with external auditors and coordinating the audit

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrates attention to detail and performing work with accuracy.
  • Solid understanding of municipal financial processes and procedures.
  • Records and monitors investments.
  • Knowledge of information technology systems and controls, providing input on policies and strategies.
  • Knowledge of payroll and benefits administration, and applicable legislation.
  • A high level of integrity, confidentiality and accountability.
  • Knowledge of the Alberta Municipal Government Act (M.G.A.) and other relevant Alberta legislation.
  • Time Management, balancing numerous high priority tasks and duties
  • Knowledge of GST compliance and filing

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to identify issues that require notification of leadership
  • Ability to independently make defendable judgment calls for those issues that do not require further input from the Director
  • Ability to occasionally work remotely if required
  • Successful candidate will be required to provide a current Criminal Records Check as a condition of employment
  • Authorized to work in Canada

Community Peace Officer 1 (CPO 1) (see printable pdf)

Opportunity

The Town of Vermilion is currently seeking a Full‐Time Community Peace Officer 1 (CPO 1) to join the Community Service Team. Reporting to the Director of Community Service, the CPO 1 is responsible for enforcement of Municipal bylaws and Provincial Statutes as approved by the Province of Alberta, responding to and investigating complaints, conducing vehicle patrols within the Town of Vermilion, liaising with other enforcement and Emergency Service agencies, partnered Enforcement Contracts, and participating or assisting with community events.

Responsibilities

As a member of the Enforcement Services unit, the CPO 1 assists and works cooperatively with the RCMP and other municipal departments and the community to fulfill the Town’s objectives in the areas of enforcement, prevention, intervention, and education. Key objectives and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Enforce various legislation as it relates to municipal operations;
  • Ensure enforcement of municipal bylaws and provincial acts;
  • Ensure that inquiries and complaints enforcement activities and responsibilities are handled promptly, effectively and with professionalism;
  • Ensure appropriate resolutions are achieved;
  • Participation at special events as they pertain to enforcement services;
  • Prepare reports and presentations as required;
  • Office administration functions including assisting in development of plans and standard operating procedures;
  • Filing and quality records management; assist in review of departmental policies and bylaws; and other relates duties;
  • Work effectively with municipal departments, RCMP, federal and provincial agencies, and community organizations on a continual basis;
  • Shift work is required; work will be subject to outdoor weather conditions.

Requirements

  • Degree and /or Diploma in Police and Justice Studies or related field;
  • Appointment, or ability to obtain appointment, as a Community Peace Officer 1;
  • All required training as outlined under the Alberta Peace Officer’s Act as outlined by the Solicitor General;
  • Knowledge and operational experience in Bylaw Enforcement and Provincial Legislation (Prior Municipal CPO experience is an asset). Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered;
  • Valid Class 5 License and Drivers Abstract;
  • Valid PARE Certification (or equivalent);
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification;
  • Specialized training including Baton, O.C. Spray, Traffic Enforcement (laser & radar);
  • Excellent written and verbal communication (public and internal) skills including preparation and presentation of high-quality reports;
  • Highly developed organizational, interpersonal, problem solving, issue management and dispute resolution skills;
  • Proficient computer technology skills (including Microsoft Office suite); experience with Report Executive is an asset;
  • A satisfactory Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector is a condition of employment;
  • The successful incumbent will be required to successfully obtain and sustain Solicitor General Security Clearance and an Enhanced Security Clearance through the RCMP. Preference will be given to candidates who currently possess such clearances.

 Compensation

C-2 step Grid ($75,962 – $92,419) plus shift differential premiums for evenings and weekends as applicable. We offer a comprehensive wellness and pension benefit package, workplace development and great opportunities for employees to become involved in the community.

Summer Student Employment - Vermilion Visitor Information Center (2 positions) (see printable pdf)

We are looking for two applicants to start May 3, 2021 – September 3, 2021. These are full-time positions as we get ready for the Summer Tourism Season!

  • Provide exceptional customized trip planning and customer service to visitors travelling to Alberta
  • Proactively promote attractions, events, experiences and destinations across the province, including assisting travelers with booking accommodations and activities.
  • Influence visitors to do more and extend their length of stay in Alberta by matching their interests and needs to Alberta’s attractions, experiences and destinations.
  • Distribute information and essential travel tips.
  • Complete administrative tasks such as preparing reports, and collecting and entering visitor statistics and other duties as assigned by Economic Development.

Qualifications:

Visitor Information Centre staff must be proactive and able to recall/search Alberta information quickly and be comfortable dealing with people. Having well-honed listening and questioning skills are essential, in order to establish credibility in your interactions with travelers. All candidates must have a high school education. Expertise with internet based research, social media channels and Microsoft Excel and Word is essential.

Required Education:

  • High school or equivalent
  • Applicants must be returning to school studies in the fall

 

Job Type: Full-Time

Rate of pay: $15.00/hour

  • Weekend and Statutory Holiday work is required.
  • Attendance at training in Edmonton (May 2021) is a condition of employment.
  • Successful candidates will be required to obtain First Aid Certification before commencing work. We reserve the right to ask for a Criminal Record check.
